From the archives: My way or the highway

Throughout treatment, I shared updates with friends and family through a website called Carepages. Here's a post I wrote just after my last radiation treatment in April 12, 2011.

Three weeks out of treatment!!!!!

There are the exclamation points I'm sure all my dear supporters longed for. Finally, being out of treatment isn't looking so bad. (haha)

I've covered a lot of milestones in the three short weeks that have passed. Last weekend I visited Cleveland, OH for my first out-of-country trip in 14 months! I've also started working full-time again, which doesn't hurt as bad as I thought it might. And, the celebratory events have only just begun.
It's not easy, though, not yet. If treatment has taught me anything, it's how to be loyal to yourself, and the importance of pursuing goals and desires that are all your own. I've spent countless nights lying awake over the past few weeks, wondering what my most truthful and honest goals are, and how to steer my life onto the path to achieving those goals.

One quote from a book I've been reading reminds me of what's important, however, in moving forward with this post-treatment journey.

"Have patience with everything that remains unsolved in your heart. Try to love the questions themselves, like locked rooms and like books written in a foreign language. Do not look for the answers. They cannot now be given to you because you could not live them. It is a question of experiencing everything."
And luckily, the second thing treatment has taught me is that I have all the time in the world. Success is the product of patience, and there's nothing like enduring chemo and radiation to teach you a lot of that!

So for now, I'm going to hold tight. I'm eager as hell to get my life started, but now I know I have to do it the right way - my way!
