#51: Disconnect and Decompress

As the end of summer nears, the pressure is on to maximize every moment of my weekends so I know I've made the most of this summer. This past mid-August weekend, I took extreme measures to ensure that I didn't waste a second. I turned off my phone.

Since getting my iPhone in December of last year, I have spent a lot of time staring at my phone's screen. There is no shortage of ways to connect, either through the endless number of social media apps, or by retrieving a piece of information through a Google search. While I was at the cottage last weekend, I spent half one night scouring the internet on my phone to find out the name of that song, you know with the famous saxophone riff... no, not Careless Whisper... you know how it goes.... who the heck played it?! It was Gerry Rafferty, Baker Street. And, I just wasted an hour of my precious little long weekend, cottage time.

Serenity captured!
That weekend taught me an important lesson. There's no point to removing yourself from a stressful environment if it's so easily accessed simply by opening your e-mail, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest. So this weekend, while up at the most peaceful, serene cottage in Hunstville, I powered off. And I attribute most of the peacefulness to my inability to communicate with the outside world. It was lovely. (Any emergency phone calls were directed to my boyfriend's non-smart phone.)

You know what waited for me when I turned my phone back on? Nothing at all. At least, nothing important. The only thing that mattered this weekend was decompressing and chilling out. Thanks to the 'power off' button, that's exactly what I got.

  1. Ha! Nothing was on your phone because you told me you were turning it off. Had you not told me it was off, I would have sent 1 million texts, 500,000 e-mails and at least 3 Billion voice messages wondering why you didn't answer. But you are probably right - nothing important. haha glad you enjoyed the peace and quiet you deserve it.
    Love, Momma
